The 6.7L Cummins has powered Ram heavy duty trucks for nearly two decades, and the engine changed a lot along the way: new emissions equipment in 2013, hydraulic lifters and a new fuel pump in 2019, and an all-new transmission in 2025. The right oil, fuel filters and transmission service depend on your year, and so do the failure points to watch.
Alligator splits the 6.7 into five year ranges because that is where the parts change. Pick your truck below to show only its maintenance and parts. Every product card lists the fitment as it appears on the product page, and the product page has the final word.

The 2025-2026 6.7 is a substantially new engine with an oil filter on top of the engine, glow plugs instead of a grid heater, and a ZF-built 8-speed automatic. Use the fluid specs and intervals in your owner's manual. Do not assume earlier 6.7 specs carry over, especially for transmission fluid.
Capacities are approximate. Confirm specs for your exact truck in the owner's manual or diesel supplement.
On 2007.5-2024 engines, the intake grid heater sits in the intake path just ahead of the cylinder head. Its mounting hardware can loosen, and a nut or bolt that falls into the intake can damage the engine, often cylinder 6. A sudden knock, power loss, or codes such as P2609 or P0542 are warning signs. Inspect it during any intake work, and consider an upgraded heater assembly or a revised intake plate. 2025 and newer engines use glow plugs instead.

Check price and fitmentThe Holset variable geometry turbo's vanes can gum up and stick, and its electronic actuator can fail. A weak exhaust brake is often the first sign, followed by lazy response, low or erratic boost, high exhaust temperature and limp mode. Codes like P003A, P2262 and P0299 point here. Replacing the actuator requires a calibration (relearn). Regular use of the exhaust brake keeps the vanes moving, and proper warm-up and cool-down protect the turbo.

Check price and fitment2019-2020 trucks shipped with a Bosch CP4.2 pump. Wear inside the pump can send metal through the fuel system, and failures are usually sudden: the engine sputters, stalls and will not restart. Recall 21V-880 replaces it with a CP3 and updates the engine computer at no charge. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm the work was done. 2021-2024 trucks came with a CP3.
2019 and newer engines use hydraulic roller lifters. Ram's service bulletin prohibits 15W-40 oil in these engines because it can lead to lifter deposits, noise and engine damage. Use 10W-30 CK-4, or 5W-40 synthetic below 0°F. A tick at cold start is worth investigating early.
EGR coolers can clog or crack internally, especially on trucks that tow heavy. Unexplained coolant loss, white vapor from the tailpipe and overheating are the warning signs. Replace a failed cooler with an OE or upgraded replacement and pressure test the cooling system. Cleaning the EGR valve and passages is routine care on higher mileage trucks.

Check price and fitmentThe lift pump on every 2007.5-2024 6.7 pickup is electric and lives in the fuel tank. Keep fuel clean and the filters fresh, and the injection pump and injectors will last. Drain water from the separator whenever the water in fuel light comes on, and do not run the tank dry. After a filter change, cycle the key several times to prime the system before starting.
2007.5-2012 trucks use a single engine-mounted fuel filter and water separator. The factory in-tank lift pumps on these years had a reputation for failing, and many owners add a frame-mounted lift pump with extra filtration.
2013 and newer trucks use two filters: one on the engine and one on the frame rail ahead of the tank. Change both together every 15,000 miles or 12 months.

Every 6.7 holds about 12 quarts with the filter. Use a low ash CK-4 oil to protect the particulate filter. The crankcase ventilation (CCV) filter is a scheduled item that many owners forget: a plugged filter raises crankcase pressure and can push oil into the intake and out of seals.
Use 15W-40 CK-4 above 0°F, and 5W-40 full synthetic below.

Check price and fitmentThe particulate filter, EGR system and, on 2013 and newer pickups, the DEF system are factory equipment that keep the truck running at full power when they are healthy. Drive at highway speed regularly, avoid long idling, let regenerations finish, and use low ash CK-4 oil, since ash cannot be burned out of the filter.
Use only certified DEF (API / ISO 22241). If DEF runs out or the system faults, the truck warns you and then limits speed. Common DEF system faults involve the heater, quality sensor, doser and NOx sensors. Replace failed parts with correct OE spec components.
2007.5-2012 pickups do not use DEF. They rely on EGR, an oxidation catalyst, a NOx adsorber catalyst and a particulate filter, so keeping regenerations healthy matters even more.
The 68RFE uses ATF+4. Ram's normal interval is 120,000 miles, but transmission shops recommend 30,000-50,000 miles, or every 20,000-30,000 if you tow heavy. Heat is its enemy: keep fluid temperature below about 200°F, and treat regular readings above 220°F as a sign cooling needs help. Common failures include torque converter clutch shudder, overdrive clutch wear and valve body wear.
The factory thermal bypass valve in the cooler circuit controls when fluid goes to the cooler. A worn or restrictive valve keeps fluid hot when you tow. Replacing it with an upgraded valve is one of the most popular 68RFE upgrades.

Call 208-719-7400Send us a message2007.5-2018 trucks use 15W-40 CK-4 above 0°F. 2019 and newer trucks use 10W-30 CK-4, and Ram's service bulletin says 15W-40 must not be used in 2019 and newer engines. Below 0°F, 2007.5-2024 trucks use a 5W-40 full synthetic. For 2025-2026, follow your owner's manual.
About 12 quarts with the filter.
2007.5-2012 trucks: every 7,500 miles or 6 months. 2013-2024: follow the oil change indicator, never more than 15,000 miles or 500 hours, and check your owner's manual for the time limit. 2025-2026: follow your owner's manual. Many owners who tow use a shorter interval.
Every 15,000 miles or 12 months. 2013 and newer trucks have two filters, one on the engine and one on the frame, and both should be changed together. Drain water whenever the water in fuel light comes on.
Only 2019-2020 trucks shipped with a CP4, and recall 21V-880 replaces it with a CP3. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. 2007.5-2018 and 2021-2024 trucks use a CP3, and 2025 and newer use a new Bosch CP8.
On 2007.5-2024 engines, the intake grid heater's mounting hardware can loosen, and a part that falls into the intake can damage the engine. Inspect it during intake work and consider an upgraded heater kit. 2025 and newer engines use glow plugs.
2013 and newer Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups use DEF. 2007.5-2012 pickups do not.
The 68RFE is in standard output trucks from 2007.5 to 2024. The Aisin AS69RC is in 3500 High Output trucks from 2013 to 2024. The G56 manual was offered through 2018. 2025 and newer trucks use a ZF-built 8-speed.
The factory valve controls when transmission fluid goes to the cooler. A worn or restrictive valve keeps fluid hot when towing. An upgraded valve sends fluid to the cooler sooner and helps keep temperatures down.
On 2007.5-2018 engines, check and adjust valve lash at 150,000 miles. 2019 and newer engines use hydraulic lifters that do not need adjustment.
Treat the front end as a system: inspect the track bar and bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, drag link, unit bearings and steering box, replace worn parts, retorque the steering box frame bolts and align the truck.
