The 6.4L Power Stroke makes big, smooth power through its compound turbos and common rail injection, and it can be a great truck to own. It is also the least forgiving of neglect of any Power Stroke. Water in the fuel, a leaking radiator, cracked up-pipes and oil thinned by fuel all cause expensive damage if they are ignored, and all of them are preventable.
This guide covers what to check, what to replace and in what order, with the parts we carry for 2008-2010 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks. Every product card lists the fitment as it appears on the product page, and the product page has the final word on fitment for your exact truck.
The 6.4 shares the 5R110W transmission and much of its chassis with the 6.0, but the engine works very differently. That matters when you shop for parts and when you read advice online written for the 6.0.
| 6.4L (2008-2010) | Why it matters | |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel injection | Siemens K16 high pressure common rail pump and piezo injectors | Extremely sensitive to water and debris. Clean fuel is everything |
| Lift pump pressure | About 3-8 psi from the frame-mounted HFCM | Do not use 6.0 fuel pressure numbers (45 psi and up) on a 6.4 |
| Turbos | Compound: a variable geometry high pressure turbo fed by a larger low pressure turbo | Up-pipe and exhaust leaks cost power and spool |
| Emissions equipment | EGR with two coolers, oxidation catalyst and DPF with regeneration | Regeneration can dilute the oil with fuel |
| Radiator | Aluminum core with crimped plastic end tanks | The single most common 6.4 failure |
| Cab | Designed to be lifted for major engine work | Big jobs add labor, so do related repairs together |
Ford's normal intervals assume highway miles with few regenerations. Most 6.4 owners should follow the severe column: towing, idling, short trips, dust and stop and go driving all count.
| Item | Spec | Normal | Severe / towing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | 15 quarts with filter. Low ash oil required (API CJ-4 or later). 15W-40 for towing in warm weather | 10,000 miles or 6 months | 5,000 miles or 6 months. Most specialists recommend 5,000 for every 6.4 |
| Oil level check | Look for a rising level (fuel dilution) | Every other week | Every other week |
| Fuel filters (frame and engine) | Replace both together | 20,000 miles or 24 months | 10,000 miles or 400 hours |
| Water separator drain | Yellow quarter turn valve on the frame-mounted HFCM | Every oil change | Every oil change and any time the water in fuel light comes on |
| Coolant | Motorcraft Premium Gold, about 30.6 quarts (7.66 gallons) | First change at 100,000 miles / 6 years, then every 50,000 miles / 3 years | Check additive level every 20,000 miles |
| 5R110W automatic | Motorcraft Mercon SP only. Replace internal and external filters | 30,000 miles | 30,000 miles |
| ZF6 manual | Mercon V, about 5.8 quarts | 100,000 miles | 60,000 miles |
| Transfer case | Confirm the fluid in your owner's manual (Mercon LV or XL-12 depending on the case), about 2 quarts | 150,000 miles | 60,000 miles |
| Air filter | Replace by the restriction indicator | Inspect every oil change | Inspect every oil change |
| Front end inspection | Track bar, ball joints, tie rod ends, drag link | Every oil change | Every oil change |
Capacities are approximate. Fill to the dipstick or cold fill mark, and confirm specs in your owner's manual.
The Siemens K16 high pressure pump can produce more than 24,000 psi and feeds piezo injectors with very tight tolerances. When it gets water or debris, or when its supply runs short, it can fail and send metal into the injectors and rails. At that point the repair is usually the pump, all eight injectors, the rails and lines, and a fuel tank flush. That repair commonly runs well over $6,000 at a shop.
Prevention is cheap by comparison:
An aftermarket lift pump with extra filtration and better water separation is the most popular insurance on a 6.4. It adds filtration before the factory system and keeps the high pressure pump fed.

Check price and fitmentWhen the 6.4 regenerates its diesel particulate filter, it adds a late shot of fuel to heat the exhaust. Some of that fuel washes past the rings and ends up in the oil. On trucks that idle or make short trips, regenerations happen often, and the oil level can climb a gallon or more between changes. Thin, fuel diluted oil is hard on bearings.

Check price and fitmentThe factory radiator uses plastic end tanks crimped onto an aluminum core, and the joint where they meet is where they leak. Look along the sides of the radiator for white coolant crust or rust streaks. Ford's service bulletin for leaking 6.4 radiators also checks the degas bottle and cap and the orientation of the cooling system tee, and calls for a vacuum refill with fresh Motorcraft Premium Gold. A slow leak that keeps the system low can cause the cycling that cracks radiator tubes, so do not top it off and keep driving.
The common fix is an all-aluminum radiator with welded tanks. Getting it out means removing the intercooler, moving the transmission cooler and A/C condenser, and pulling the upper fan shroud, so replace hoses, thermostats and the degas cap at the same time.

Check price and fitmentThe 6.4 holds about 30.6 quarts of Motorcraft Premium Gold. Keep the additive level up and flush on schedule. Low additive allows cavitation, which can eat pinholes through the front cover. Coolant breakdown also clogs the engine oil cooler, and a bypass coolant filter helps keep debris out of it.

Check price and fitmentThe 6.4 has two EGR coolers. The horizontal cooler, which sees the hottest exhaust first, fails most often. Coolers plug with soot and crack from heat. The warning signs are coolant loss with no visible leak, coolant pushed out of the degas bottle, and white vapor (steam) from the tailpipe. Replace a failed cooler with a new OEM or OEM-spec cooler, and make sure the cooling system is clean so the factory EGR system works as designed. Coolant entering a cylinder can hydrolock the engine, so do not keep driving on a suspected cooler failure.

Check price and fitmentThe up-pipes that carry exhaust from the manifolds to the turbos use flexible bellows that crack from heat cycling and engine movement. A cracked up-pipe hisses, costs power and spool, and leaves soot on the firewall and transmission tunnel. Replacement up-pipes are a common and worthwhile repair. Do them at the same time as any job that has the cab lifted.

Check price and fitmentThe factory compound turbo setup pairs a variable geometry high pressure turbo with a larger low pressure turbo. Ford notes that about a third of high pressure turbo repairs also need a low pressure turbo, so inspect both. A restricted particulate filter exposes the turbos to extreme heat and back pressure, which is another reason to keep regenerations healthy. Check intercooler boots and clamps at every oil change.

Call 208-719-7400Send us a messageAbout 15 quarts with a filter change. Use a low ash oil rated API CJ-4 or later because of the particulate filter.
Fuel from particulate filter regeneration is diluting the oil. Change the oil right away and shorten your intervals to 5,000 miles. Less idling and more highway driving reduces regenerations.
Ford lists 10,000 miles under normal use and 5,000 miles under severe use. Because of fuel dilution, most 6.4 specialists recommend 5,000 miles for every truck.
Change both filters every 20,000 miles or 24 months, or every 10,000 miles under severe use. Drain the water separator at every oil change and whenever the water in fuel light comes on.
About 3-8 psi, measured at the Schrader port on the fuel cooler. That is far lower than a 6.0, so do not use 6.0 numbers on a 6.4.
When the pump fails, debris travels into the injectors and rails, so the repair usually includes the pump, all eight injectors, rails, lines and a tank flush. Clean fuel and on-time filters are the best prevention.
The factory radiator's plastic end tanks separate from the aluminum core. Ford has a service bulletin for it. An all-aluminum replacement radiator is the common fix.
Two. The horizontal cooler sees the hottest exhaust first and fails most often.
Often a cracked up-pipe bellows. Look for soot on the firewall and transmission tunnel.
Motorcraft Premium Gold, about 30.6 quarts (7.66 gallons). Ford calls for a vacuum refill after radiator replacement.
Motorcraft Mercon SP only, with both the internal and external filters replaced every 30,000 miles.
For big jobs like turbos, the high pressure fuel pump or head gaskets, yes. That adds labor, so it pays to do related repairs at the same time.
