Ford's 6.7L Power Stroke is the most powerful and, in later years, the most reliable Power Stroke yet. It is also the most complex: two cooling systems, a high pressure fuel pump that does not tolerate bad fuel, emissions equipment that needs the right fluids, and transmissions that each want their own specific ATF. Get the maintenance right and these trucks run a long time. Skip it and the bills are big.
Alligator splits the 6.7 into four year ranges because the parts change between them. Pick your truck below to show only its maintenance and parts. Every product card lists the fitment as it appears on the product page, and the product page has the final word.

Ford's intervals assume normal driving. Towing, idling, short trips, dusty roads and biodiesel all count as severe service, and most working trucks belong there. Follow the oil life monitor and your owner's manual first.

Every 6.7 Power Stroke uses a Bosch CP4 high pressure fuel pump. When a CP4 fails, it can send metal through the lines, rails and all eight injectors, and the repair usually means replacing the whole high pressure system and cleaning the tank. Failures rarely give much warning, so prevention is everything:

Check price and fitmentUse oil that lists Ford's WSS-M2C171-F1 specification on the label. Ford found that some oils carrying only the API CK-4 rating did not meet its wear criteria. 5W-40 is the choice for towing and severe duty, and 10W-30 works for normal driving above 0°F.
During particulate filter regeneration, a late shot of fuel can wash past the rings into the oil. Trucks that idle or make short trips see more of it. If the oil level rises between changes, change it, and consider shorter intervals or an oil analysis. Many specialists keep 2011-2022 trucks at 5,000 miles. The crankcase ventilation filter also needs periodic service, more often on trucks that idle.

Check price and fitmentThe 6.7 has two separate cooling systems, each with its own radiator, degas bottle, thermostat and water pump. The high temperature system cools the engine. The low temperature system, with its radiator in front, cools the air to water charge air cooler and the fuel cooler (and on some years the transmission and part of the EGR cooler). Check both degas bottles, and use the coolant type printed on the cap. Ford changed the factory coolant on trucks built around July 2018, so never assume. Coolant can change color from orange to pink in normal use.
Safety: never open the degas cap on a hot engine. Let it cool fully first.
On 2011-2016 trucks, the primary radiator commonly leaks where the plastic end tanks crimp onto the core, especially on early 2011 trucks. Look for coolant crust along the tank seams. An all-aluminum replacement is the common fix. 2011-2014 trucks also had a turbo coolant feed line that can leak at its quick connect fitting.

Check price and fitment2011-2014 trucks use a Garrett DualBoost turbo with a ceramic ball bearing center section, which is a known failure point, mainly on 2011-2012 pickups. A loud screech or whine, oil burning and power loss are the warning signs. 2015-2016 trucks moved to a Garrett GT37 with a journal bearing center section, which solved the problem and added an exhaust brake.
Exhaust manifold leaks are common on 2011-2019 trucks. Replacement manifolds and up-pipe gaskets fix them. Check the intake and charge pipes for leaks and cracks.

Check price and fitmentThe 6.7's diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system, particulate filter and EGR system are factory equipment, and keeping them healthy keeps the truck running at full power. Use DEF that meets Ford's spec, let regenerations finish instead of shutting the truck off mid-cycle, avoid long idling, and replace failed sensors with correct OE spec parts. The EGR cooler is coolant cooled, so a healthy cooling system protects it too.
Early trucks had more emissions sensor problems. 2011-2012 trucks saw NOx sensor and EGT sensor failures, and Ford issued a service bulletin for restricted EGR cooler cores on 2011-2012 engines (codes P0401 and P2457).
The 6R140 takes Motorcraft Mercon LV. Ford's normal interval is long, but if you tow, change the fluid and filter every 50,000 miles. A deep pan adds fluid capacity and helps with heat.

Check price and fitmentThe 10R140 takes Motorcraft Mercon ULV only. It is not compatible with other Mercon fluids. The level is set at operating temperature with a scan tool, so this is not a simple pan drop. Ford issued a service bulletin for harsh reverse to drive engagement on 2020-2022 trucks built on or before December 13, 2021.
The factory transmission thermal bypass valve controls coolant flow to the transmission cooler so the fluid warms up quickly. Owners who tow heavy often replace it with an aftermarket valve that lets coolant flow through the transmission cooler at all times, which lowers towing temperatures. PPE makes a version for the 6.7L 10R140 (part 319080100), so call our sales team to order the right one. In very cold climates, keep in mind that the factory valve helps the transmission warm up.

Check price and fitmentDeath wobble on Super Duty trucks is almost never one bad part. It is wear stacking up across the track bar, ball joints, tie rod ends, drag link and steering damper until a bump starts an oscillation the front end cannot stop. Bigger tires and lifts speed up the wear. A new damper can hide it, but the fix is replacing the worn parts as a set and aligning the truck.
On 2017-2019 F-250 and F-350 4x4 trucks, Ford issued a service bulletin for steering wheel oscillation above 45 mph after bumps, traced to the steering damper, and extended damper coverage under program 20N04. Coverage runs 7 years or 100,000 miles from the warranty start date, so many trucks have aged out. Ask your Ford dealer whether yours qualifies before buying parts.

Call 208-719-7400Send us a message13 quarts with the filter on 2011-2022 trucks, and 15 quarts on 2023 and newer trucks, which have a larger oil pan.
Use an oil that lists Ford's WSS-M2C171-F1 specification on the label. 5W-40 is the choice for towing and severe duty, 10W-30 works for normal driving above 0°F, and 0W-40 is for extreme cold.
Follow the oil life monitor, but never go past 10,000 miles on 2011-2022 trucks or 15,000 miles on 2023 and newer. On 2011-2022 trucks in severe service, the maximum is 5,000 miles.
Replace both filters together, roughly every 15,000 to 22,500 miles depending on year and use, or when the truck displays the message. Drain the water separator regularly and whenever the water in fuel light comes on.
Yes. Every 6.7 Power Stroke from 2011 on uses a Bosch CP4 high pressure pump. Clean fuel and on-time filters are the best protection, and a disaster prevention kit can limit the damage if the pump fails.
The 6.7 has two separate cooling systems. The high temperature system cools the engine, and the low temperature system cools the charge air and fuel coolers. Each has its own pump and degas bottle.
Ford changed the factory coolant on trucks built around July 2018. Use the coolant type printed on your degas cap or listed in your owner's manual, and never mix types.
The 6R140 (2011-2019) takes Mercon LV. The 10R140 (2020 and newer) takes Mercon ULV only. They are not interchangeable.
Ask a Ford dealer about service bulletin 19-2274 and extended coverage program 20N04 for the steering damper. Then inspect the track bar, ball joints and tie rods, since worn parts cause the same symptom.
Yes. 2011-2014 trucks use a Garrett DualBoost turbo with ceramic ball bearings, which is a known failure point, mainly on 2011-2012 pickups. 2015 and newer trucks use a Garrett GT37 with journal bearings.
The factory valve controls coolant flow to the transmission cooler so the fluid warms quickly. An upgraded valve lets coolant flow through the transmission cooler at all times, which lowers transmission temperatures when towing. Call our sales team for the version that fits the 6.7L.
