Every 6.6L Duramax shares the same basic architecture, but the engine has been through six generations, each with its own fuel system, emissions equipment and weak points. An LB7's biggest risk is its injectors, an LLY's is heat, an LML's is its fuel pump, and the front end on 2001-2010 trucks wears no matter which engine is under the hood. This guide covers what to check and buy for each one.
Pick your engine below to show only its maintenance and parts. Not sure which you have? The 8th character of your VIN tells you: 1 = LB7, 2 = LLY, D = LBZ, 6 = LMM, 8 = LML, Y = L5P. Every product card lists the fitment as it appears on the product page, and the product page has the final word.
| Engine | Years | VIN 8th | Fuel pump / lift pump | Emissions equipment | Transmission |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LB7 | 2001-2004 | 1 | Bosch CP3, no lift pump | None | Allison 5-speed |
| LLY | 2004.5-2005 (and early 2006) | 2 | Bosch CP3, no lift pump | EGR | Allison 5-speed (2004.5-2005) |
| LBZ | 2006-2007 | D | Bosch CP3, no lift pump | EGR | Allison 6-speed |
| LMM | 2007.5-2010 | 6 | Bosch CP3, no lift pump | EGR, oxidation catalyst, particulate filter | Allison 6-speed |
| LML | 2011-2016 | 8 | Bosch CP4.2, no lift pump | EGR, oxidation catalyst, particulate filter, SCR with DEF | Allison 6-speed |
| L5P | 2017-2019 | Y | Denso HP4, factory in-tank lift pump | EGR, oxidation catalyst, particulate filter, SCR with DEF | Allison 6-speed |
| L5P | 2020-2024 | Y | Denso HP4, factory in-tank lift pump | EGR, oxidation catalyst, particulate filter, SCR with DEF | Allison 10L1000 10-speed |
Every 6.6L Duramax holds about 10 quarts of oil with the filter. GM's oil life monitor sets the interval, never more than 10,000 miles or 12 months. Change sooner if you tow near your rating, haul heavy or idle a lot. Your owner's manual has the final word.

LB7 through LMM engines use a Bosch CP3 pump with no factory lift pump. The CP3 has to pull fuel all the way from the tank by suction, which is hard on it, especially with a partly clogged filter, air leaks or hot fuel. A frame-mounted lift pump with extra filtration and air and water separation is the single best reliability upgrade for these trucks, and it also helps with low rail pressure codes when towing.
Change the engine-mounted fuel filter every 15,000 miles and drain the water separator at the same time. There is no electric pump to prime the system, so use the hand plunger on the filter head and open the bleed screw until fuel flows with no air. Do not pre-fill the new filter. Move the water in fuel sensor to the new filter with a fresh O-ring.

Check price and fitmentThe LML's Bosch CP4.2 pump has no factory lift pump, and it pulls fuel by suction. When supply runs short or air gets in, the pump's internal parts can wear metal on metal and send debris through the rails, injectors and return lines. The engine often dies and will not restart, and the repair can run $6,000 to $10,000 or more.

Check price and fitmentLB7 injectors typically fail between 100,000 and 150,000 miles from cracked bodies or ball seat erosion. Because they sit under the valve covers, a leaking injector dumps fuel into the oil. Warning signs: the oil level rising above full with a diesel smell, long cranking, a hard warm restart, excess exhaust at idle, and balance rates outside about plus or minus 4 mm3 in Park. GM's 7 year / 200,000 mile injector warranty extension for 2001-2003 trucks has expired. Replace all eight at once with an updated design and new seals.

Check price and fitmentOn LML and L5P trucks, injector life depends mainly on clean fuel. Keep the filters fresh and the water drained. Some L5P owners report cylinder 4 misfire codes caused by the injector connector, so check the connection before replacing the injector.
All Duramax engines use DEX-COOL mixed 50/50 with distilled water, and two thermostats. Replace both thermostats and the hoses at the first coolant change. Debris packed between the radiator, intercooler and A/C condenser is a common cause of high temperatures, so clean the stack when you service the cooling system.
The LLY is known for running hot when towing, especially 2004.5-2005 trucks. The causes stack up: a cooling system that was not upgraded when EGR was added, a restrictive factory turbo inlet, debris in the cooling stack and a weak fan clutch. Fixes include cleaning the stack, an improved turbo inlet or mouthpiece, an upgraded fan clutch, fresh thermostats and, for heavy towing, a high efficiency radiator. Repeated overheating can lead to head gasket failure, which is a very large repair.

Check price and fitmentThe LB7 has no EGR or particulate filter, which keeps maintenance simpler.
LLY and LBZ engines use EGR. Long idling builds oily soot in the EGR valve and cooler. Clean the valve on high mileage trucks, and watch for coolant loss with white vapor from the tailpipe, which points to an internal EGR cooler leak.
From the LMM on, the particulate filter traps soot and burns it off during regeneration. Drive at highway speed regularly, avoid long idling, let regenerations finish, and use low ash oil, since ash cannot be burned out of the filter. Inspect the EGR system and particulate filter around 100,000 miles. Professional off-vehicle cleaning costs far less than a new filter.
LML and L5P trucks use DEF. Use only ISO 22241 certified fluid. If DEF runs low, the truck limits speed in stages. On the LML, NOx sensor faults, DEF heater failures and DEF pump failures are the common DEF system problems. Replace failed parts with correct OE spec components.

About 10 quarts with the filter, on every generation from the LB7 to the L5P.
15W-40 above 0°F and 5W-40 below for most trucks. 2007.5 and newer engines with a particulate filter need low ash CJ-4 or CK-4 oil. Check your owner's manual for your exact year.
No. 2001-2016 trucks have no factory lift pump, so the injection pump pulls fuel from the tank by suction. The L5P is the first Duramax with a factory in-tank lift pump. An aftermarket lift pump with filtration is the top reliability upgrade for earlier trucks.
Yes. The LML's Bosch CP4.2 can fail and send debris through the fuel system, and the repair often costs $6,000 to $10,000 or more. A lift pump with filtration, on-time fuel filters and a fuel lubricity additive help. A CP3 conversion is the most complete fix.
No. The L5P uses a Denso HP4 pump and has a factory lift pump.
No. GM's 7 year / 200,000 mile injector warranty extension for 2001-2003 trucks has expired.
The LLY's cooling system has little margin. A restrictive factory turbo inlet, debris packed in the cooling stack, a weak fan clutch and tired thermostats all add up. Clean the stack, upgrade the turbo inlet and check the fan clutch and thermostats.
On 2001-2010 trucks, the idler arm and pitman arm wear out, along with tie rods and ball joints. A support kit for the idler and pitman arms is the standard fix. On 2011 and newer trucks, tie rods are the common wear item.
The Allison 1000 five-speed and six-speed use DEXRON VI. The 2020 and newer Allison 10L1000 uses DEXRON ULV only.
Every 15,000 miles on LB7 through LMM trucks, and about every 22,500 miles or at the message on LML and L5P trucks. Drain the water separator at each change.
