S&B engineered the 10-1036 as a midship replacement tank that follows the original footprint while increasing usable fuel capacity to approximately 56 gallons. The tank uses the truck's OEM sending unit, allowing the factory fuel gauge to operate normally once the initial 4 to 5 gallons have been consumed and the needle begins moving from full. GM's distance to empty system cannot be recalibrated for the larger tank, so the displayed range will read approximately half of the actual remaining distance and can be multiplied by two for a practical estimate. Because the bottom of the S&B tank has more surface area than the original tank, drivers should also expect a larger fuel reserve to remain when the low fuel indicator comes on. An oversized fill neck makes the tank compatible with high flow commercial fueling stations and allows the nozzle to fill automatically, which is particularly useful for trucks that spend plenty of time at truck stops.
