Ford 7.3L Engine Identification

In Ford 7.3L engines, the vehicle VIN may not identify which engine or fuel system components are needed for a repair.

Each variation requires different injectors and high-pressure oil pumps.

In Ford 7.3L engines, the vehicle VIN may not identify which engine or fuel system components are needed for a repair.

Ford 7.3L engines can be identified by the engine serial number or production engine ID number. All Ford 7.3L engines have the serial number stamped into the block at the rear oil cooler pad located at the lower left side of the engine block rearward of the oil filter. The alphanumeric production ID number has seven characters, example 2E 007 AA. Sometimes the engine build date may be useful.

On 1994 – 1995 vehicles, the engine production ID number and engine build date are located on the calibration label located on the high-pressure pump oil reservoir.

On 1996 and up models, the engine production ID number and engine build date are located on the calibration label on the left valve cover.

In the 1999 model year there were two different variations of the Ford 7.3L Power Stroke engine. Each variation requires different injectors, high-pressure oil pumps and turbochargers.

For the 1998.5 – 1999.5 model year with an engine built before 12.07.1998, with an engine serial number 896812 or below, use the DT730002R injector and a DT730007R high-pressure oil pump.

For the 1999.5 – 2003 model years with an engine built on or after 12.07.1998, with a serial number of 896813 or above, use the DT730003R injector and a DT730004R injector in cylinder number eight and a DT730008R high-pressure oil pump. For turbocharger information for 1998.5 and up models, see Product Bulletin FI-322. Often the engine calibration label is missing from the valve cover so the 1998.5 and 1999.5 engine can be identified visually.

The 1998.5 model year engine charge air cooler (CAC) to intake covers hose has different inlet and outlet diameters. The 1999.5 and up model year intake cover has a larger 3” inlet connection.
