The tuning market for the L5P has been pretty slim due to the advanced encryption of the factory ECM which really limits down what parameters can actually be altered for tuning. This has opened the door for companies to create modules that Tee in, or piggyback into factory sensors to more or less ramp up fueling.
The current modules on the market, for the most part, solely tap into the rail pressure sensor and run the lead back to the module box to increase fueling, then claim that their module talks to the ECU to tune it, but that’s not really possible without plugging into the OBD2. What is really happening is those modules are just ramping up fuel rail pressure for its power gains which is not efficient.
Doing this with a DPF equipped truck like the L5P, all that it’s going to do is ramp up your EGT’s, plug up the DPF filter, create back pressure, and force more regen cycles, Which in turn will drop your average mile per Gallon and increase the amount of DEF fluid being used.
What sets Banks’ Derringer above the rest is the ability to plug their module into the OBD2 port along with the Fuel rail pressure sensor and the Map Sensor. The Signals given to the rail pressure sensor and the map sensor is directly correlated to the data it’s reading off of the OBD2. The Derringer uses factors like; Throttle Position, EGT, Mass Air Flow Pressure, Rail Pressure, Transmission Slip, and many other parameters to allow Banks to properly tune their calibrations giving an added 61 Horsepower and 112 pounds of torque.
All in all the Banks Derringer properly tunes the L5P within the confines of the truck. They are not over tuning and jumping beyond its reliability and efficiency. Being that it is constantly reading parameters, it will evolve with the situation it is in, from towing up a grade to in town driving the Banks Derringer will not allow the truck to overheat or jump outside its safety parameters.
If you want more information about Derringer, check out our website product page. We have a ton of information further explaining the AutoRate, TransCommand or the Active Transmission safety system, all the Specs on the iDash 1.8, all the tests, product comparisons, plus we have a video of Gale getting nerdy on Data and how the Derringer directly compares to the other top modules on the market.
